SAHR a Year On

June is the last month of the Stay at Home Robin and Kate's instruction was to bind and label.  I finally reached the point of being at peace with this.  I had no idea from the start where I was going and had to wait for things to happen at their own pace, as things often will.

Basically, don't ask in-depth questions because I have no answers as to why!  Perhaps whatever is flying the little gyrocopters would have the answers.  (click to enlarge)

SAHR 6 & 7

Though I sent the photos on to Kate to post on the blog for me, I forgot to blog about them here!!  (Thanks Kate).

SAH Robin month 6.

SAH Robin month 7.

It is totally silk.  Why break a habit! They all had stabiliser on the back though, the green and purple silk velvet is more fluid than the up-cycled grey and burgundy silk.  The inch squares already had the stabiliser on them from the project they were originally made for and the seems helped there too. It certainly has a diagonal movement to it and I think the two colours top left bottom right are weighted right.  I just hope the embellishing part will help me integrate the different fabrics a little!!   I think it's growing on me.

SAHR 5

I previously mentioned that I did take the side strip off and turn it around.  You can see it matches the chequers which is quite strange because I certainly didn't consciously do it that way!  Must have been the little fellas at it again, and the nap of the velvet is the same now.

Month 5 was to add two pieces to the top (or bottom), one 4 x 6 inches and one 4 x 7 inches.  my 6" piece is the three strips of silk to the left and the 7" piece is the silk with the mottling and small piece of velvet to the right.

I must admit to struggling a little with this.  I do work quite a lot intuitively, seeing where the work takes me with a vague idea but I think the stumbling block is that someone else (Kate) has the master plan and I haven't had a peek.  I feel this way when I have a workshop and there are very vague instructions or I haven't seen tutor 'samples' of what we should be doing.  Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the challenge and Kate is doing a fab job being hostess but I am pushing myself through a wall each month.  Perhaps I need to do this more often!! 

SAHR Catch up

I've finally set in piece 4 of the Stay at Home Robin.

BUT I'm not too happy with it.  The chequer doesn't match up and that bugs me.  If I think some over stitching will sort of blend it, I may leave it but I can feel a ripping out coming.  I'll live with it a moment or two......

FNSI & SAHR

Well the Friday Night Sew in meant I at least did this months Stay at Home Robin!  That little block has been hanging around waiting to find the next piece it wanted and, after a lot of offerings, I more or less gave up.  Then I found a batch of hand dyed silk velvet lurking in a corner and it just wanted to be a part of this.  It does have the right blue in it and introduces green.  I think this is ending up as an exploratory of texture!  I took the photo in the morning light to capture the beautiful sheen on the silk velvet.

Other things I completed last night I can not show on here as there are two Christmas gifts and a block for a friend but they took time and I'm more than happy to have spent the time on them.

This week I also signed up for a City and Guilds course in Creative Textiles.  Should be interesting!!!

SAH Robin Block 2

I wanted to link the two blocks so I started with a lower row of the 1 inch squares, added a piece of gold silk and layered with a pink and then blue organza. They are all stitched onto a piece of calico by machine outside the seam allowance. I want to do some hand stitching on the layers but that can wait until later.

Whilst I was uploading I also thought I would show you this little (4 inches) thank you card I made in the embellisher a couple of weeks ago. It should have arrived at its destination by now (if the post office hasn’t lost yet another item of mine) so should be safe to show.

SAH Robin Block 1

I've decided to join in with Kate North's Stay At Home Robin quilt. You can read more HERE on Kate's site.

As if I haven't enough piling up on my cutting table already, I just like the thought of the unpredictable journey this will take.  I have no pre conceived ideas just lots of scraps I would like to use.

This first block, and I'm still not sure if I'm happy with it, was some left over 1.5 inch squares in recycled, over dyed silks. They are a little wonky but I think it could add charm, they are quite tactile, and there are plenty of options still to come.  This is my Robin, for me only and it doesn't have to be handled by anyone else.  Nice thought eh!!
